Microneedling Pre & Post Care Checklist at Tulum Wellness Spa

🌴 Why Your Microneedling Preparation is Crucial

Microneedling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy) is one of the most effective treatments for refining skin texture, minimizing scarring, and boosting natural collagen production. However, the quality of your results depends almost entirely on how well you prepare for the procedure and how diligently you follow the aftercare instructions.

At Tulum Wellness Spa, we prioritize your safety and results. Following this guide ensures your skin is receptive to the treatment, minimizes the risk of bruising or hyperpigmentation, and guarantees the fastest, most effective healing.

☀️ The 7-14 Day Pre-Treatment Checklist

Following these guidelines will minimize complications and optimize your outcome:

  • Avoid Blood Thinners (7 days prior): Discontinue all non-essential blood-thinning agents like Aspirin, Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and Naproxen (Aleve). These increase the risk of bruising and bleeding. Consult your physician before stopping any prescribed medication.
  • Stop Topical Active Ingredients (5-7 days prior): Discontinue using products with strong active ingredients on the treatment area, including:
    • Retinoids (Retin-A, Tretinoin, Retinol, etc.)
    • Alpha/Beta Hydroxy Acids (AHAs/BHAs) and other strong exfoliants (Glycolic, Salicylic, Lactic Acids).
    • Hydroquinone and Benzoyl Peroxide products.
  • Limit Sun Exposure (14 days prior): Avoid prolonged direct sun exposure and tanning beds. Sunburned, irritated, or recently tanned skin cannot be treated.
  • Avoid Hair Removal (5-7 days prior): Do not wax, use depilatory creams, or undergo electrolysis in the treatment area.
  • Shave Carefully (Day before): If the area has dense hair, shave it closely and gently the day before your appointment. Do not shave the day of the procedure to avoid micro-irritation.
  • Cold Sore History: If you are prone to cold sores, please notify the Spa. We may prescribe an anti-viral medication to start 2 days before your treatment.
  • Accutane/Isotretinoin: You must wait at least 6 months after discontinuing this medication before receiving a microneedling treatment.

🧖‍♀️ Day of Treatment

  • Arrive Clean: Come to the spa with your skin completely clean, free of makeup, lotion, oil, powder, or sunscreen.
  • Communicate: Inform your specialist of any changes to your medical history, any new medications, or if you have any cosmetic tattoos in the treatment area.
  • Numbing: A topical numbing cream will be applied to your skin for 30-45 minutes prior to the procedure to ensure maximum comfort.

✅ Post-Treatment Instructions (Immediate to 7 Days After)

Your skin will look and feel like a moderate sunburn, and this is completely normal! Follow these steps carefully to ensure rapid healing and optimal results.

Immediate Care (First 24 Hours)

  • Do Not Touch Face: Following the treatment, do not touch your face unless you are applying the recommended post-procedure product.
  • First Cleansing: Wait a minimum of 4 hours before gently cleansing your face. When you do wash, use only the mild cleanser recommended by your specialist and cool water. Use clean hands only and pat dry with a clean towel.
  • Fresh Linens: Be sure to use fresh linens (pillowcase, towels) that have been cleaned with a mild, fragrance-free detergent.
  • Avoid Active Products: Strictly avoid using any "active" skincare ingredients, including retinoids, low-pH Vitamin C, and exfoliating acids. Use only the gentle post-procedure serum/moisturizer provided by the Spa.
  • No Makeup or Sunscreen: Do not apply makeup or sunscreen for the first 24 hours. The micro-channels are open, and these products can cause irritation or infection.
  • Avoid Heat & Sweat: Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, hot tubs, and steam baths for at least 24-48 hours. Excessive heat and sweat can irritate the skin and increase swelling.
  • Pain Relief: If needed, use Tylenol (Acetaminophen) for discomfort. Do NOT take Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or other NSAIDs for 3-7 days, as they interfere with the natural healing process critical for collagen production.
  • Sleep Elevated: Sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated to help minimize swelling.

Days 1-3: The Healing Phase

  • Cleanse Gently: Continue to wash your face very gently with a mild cleanser and cool water. Use clean hands only and pat dry with a clean towel.
  • Moisturize Constantly: Keep your skin well-hydrated with the recommended serums and moisturizers. Your skin will feel dry and tight; reapply frequently throughout the day.
  • Sun Protection (Day 2+): Starting 24 hours after treatment, use a physical, mineral-based broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning and reapply often. Continue to minimize direct sun exposure for 14 days. Wear a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors.
  • Makeup: Mineral makeup may be applied lightly 24-48 hours after treatment, but only if your skin is not irritated. Ensure your brushes are clean!

Days 3-7: Flaking & Resurfacing

  • Do NOT Pick: Your skin may begin to flake or peel. DO NOT scratch, pick, or forcefully exfoliate the treated skin. Allow the old skin to shed naturally. Picking can lead to scarring and hyperpigmentation.
  • Continue Gentle Care: Maintain the gentle cleansing and moisturizing routine.
  • Resume Regular Products: You may generally resume your regular non-active skincare products once the flaking and irritation have completely subsided, typically after 5-7 days.
  • Retinoids/Acids: Consult your specialist, but we typically recommend waiting at least 7 days before reintroducing Retin-A, retinols, and exfoliating acids.
